Pro Bono Opportunity Guide

Social Security Reconsideration Assistance Program (Remote Opportunity)

You can help clients who are in the reconsideration stage of the SSI/SSDI disability benefit appeal process. Reconsideration is a paper review that does not require a personal appearance. Nationally, the success rate at this appeal stage is about 11%, while half or more claimants win their appeals at the following administrative hearing stage - after a long wait during which many claimants have no income at all. The goal of this project is to improve clients' chances of success at reconsideration so that they can avoid the long wait for a hearing. As a volunteer attorney, you will interview clients, gather medical and vocational evidence of clients' functional capacities and submit the evidence to the Social Security Administration's adjudicators. You will also contact the adjudicators on behalf of clients and make written arguments examining the clients' disabilities and residual functional capacities based on the criteria set forth by the Social Security Administration.
