Abuse Investigation Unit

Equip for Equality’s Abuse Investigation Unit works to address systemic issues of abuse and neglect and also individual matters, including legal rights violations in facilities. Volunteer attorneys with experience in the subject matter assist in a wide range of activities.

Equip for Equality advances the human and civil rights of children and adults with physical and mental disabilities in Illinois. EFE is a statewide, cross-disability, comprehensive advocacy organization providing self-advocacy assistance, legal services, and education, policy and legislative advocacy, abuse investigations and oversight.

Type of engagement

Litigation

Time commitment

Completion of the required training (time varies), then 1-4 hours over a month.

Training and support

Volunteers must complete a training (time varies depending on the complexity of the case) on abuse and neglect law and investigation techniques that is offered on an as needed basis. Experienced staff will also accompany volunteers on all on-site visits and investigations.

Client interviewing and counseling, negotiation, trial skills
