First Defense Legal Aid, through a nationally unique 24/7/365 hotline, provides a free and reliable lawyer to individuals who are in custody at Chicago police stations, representing them at the station (and suburban Cook County police stations for some juvenile suspects). FDLA also promotes police accountability and the protection of civil rights through street outreach, classroom presentations, and community programs.

In this interactive training, Kasey Franco of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chicago will provide participants with the tools they need to effectively communicate with others, including those living with mental health conditions. Participants will also gain an understanding of common emotional responses of those grappling with a loved one living with mental illness in addition to how to access a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained police officer and other emergency mental health resources.
